Cultural Face Recognition

It appears that you look at faces differently depending on where you’re from. East Asians focus on the center of the face, while westerners look to the eyes, then the mouth.

Psychologists from the University of Glasgow tracked eye gazes of subjects looking at portraits. Subjects were found to be equally effective in memorizing faces.

Subjects that were from East Asia and had just arrived also differed from East Asians that had been living in Glasgow for a few years. So it appears that it is a learned trait and not a genetic one. Very interesting stuff.
